A Labor of Love

These pictures are a small glimpse of where I write. This used to be a dismal, empty space with white walls and some horrid old floral curtains from our house in Kansas that were at least fifteen years old—placed merely to keep the sun from shining in too brightly. I’m a suspense author and night-owl so the sun and I don’t necessarily get along.

I need a quiet space to write. I love books and this is only a partial amount of what we own. You may be thinking—that’s a really nice writing space she has.

What you may not know is that my very dear, sweet husband designed and built it for me. All the shelves. The cabinets from scratch—nothing pre-built. It took close to a year to get all these components together. Some of that time was him waiting for me to pick out paint colors and to have a writing break so everything could be placed without interrupting the flow of words.

When it finally got finished—I had just completed the edits on the last book of the Bloodline Trilogy. As of yet, my current book proposal hasn’t been accepted by a publisher. I was lamenting to a friend of mine that I now had this beautiful office and would never be contracted to write another book.

You know how it is—we authors can have a somewhat fatalistic view on the writing life.

But she said to me, “You know what, who cares? He built those shelves because he loves you and wants you to have the writing cave you deserve because you love to write. It doesn’t matter if you ever publish again.”

Sometimes we need those gentle reminders to appreciate what we may be missing. So now, every time I’m in my office I first think how fortunate I am to have a husband who is talented in woodworking and who loves me awesomely to spend hours planning, sanding and building my perfect writing space.

And I know that love gets infused into my stories.
