ElizabethMaddreyElizabeth Maddrey coverAfter high school, my mother went to community college for two years so she could work and save for a transfer to Westmont College. Her best friend, Faith, was attending Westmont, and so it was fun to be reunited when mom finally transferred. In the intervening time, Faith had begun dating someone and was excited to introduce him to my mother.

The meeting didn’t go particularly well. My mom has a pretty quick tongue and is generally ready with a witty comeback when challenged. Faith’s boyfriend had the same tendencies. And so the two of them engaged in a (mostly) friendly battle of wits for the bulk of their meeting. Mom wasn’t impressed. At the end of the evening, Dewayne said, “I have a brother you’d like.” My mom replied, “If he’s anything like you, I don’t even want to meet him.”

Despite that, they did meet. It wasn’t love at first sight, but they became good friends. Dad hoped for more, but Mom had him relegated firmly into the friend zone. She often says that, for the longest time, the thought of even holding his hand was nauseating. But my dad, and his love of fascinating trivia, eventually won her over.

My parents celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in June. And while it hasn’t always been smooth sailing (what marriage is?), the friendship they formed before they dated has always stood as the quiet, solid bedrock to their relationship.

About Elizabeth: Elizabeth Maddrey began writing stories as soon as she could form the letters properly and has never looked back. Though her practical nature and love of math and organization steered her into computer science for college and graduate school, she has always had one or more stories in progress to occupy her free time. When she isn’t writing, Elizabeth is a voracious consumer of books and has mastered the art of reading while undertaking just about any other activity. She loves to write about Christians who struggle through their lives, dealing with sin and receiving God’s grace.
Elizabeth lives in the suburbs of Washington D.C. with her husband and their two incredibly active little boys. She invites you to interact with her at her website www.ElizabethMaddrey.com or on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/ElizabethMaddrey
